Golden Time Gardening Groups Update!

Please remember this time of year is wet and muddy so all children doing gardening on Friday afternoons will now need to bring suitable coats and wellies if possible.  We are going to be out and about around the school on Friday getting muddy!  If anyone has spare wellies that no longer fit and you would like to donate to school we would be very grateful.  They may come in useful if any children come in un prepared.

Thank you very much.

Ms. Hopkins.

Golden Time Gardening Group.

WANTED: Plants, seeds, bulbs, compost, bird seed!

Every Friday Ms. Hopkins and myself take a group into the school courtyard to do some gardening.  We have bought plants, compost, bird seed and so on but would appreciate any donations you may have at home.  If your parents or other family members have any seeds, bulbs, compost or plant cuttings they no longer want, please don't throw them away!  We would welcome them in the courtyard.  The children that have become our gardening group have worked really hard and are always ready to plant more!

We are also keen to keep feeding the birds out there.  We have a bird table and feeding stand.  Winter is on its way and the birds are going to need looking after.  Any left over bird seed or crusts of bread can be sent in too!

Diolch yn fawr!  Thank you very much!

Miss. K. Jones.

Flour Babies!

Today Class 6 were lucky enough to spend the morning working with drama expert Paul Gibbons. The children and I had a fantastic and fun filled day acting out scenes and scenarios which the children helped to create themselves.
By the end of the day the children had gone from finding 3 puppies to running an animal rescue center and looking after a 'flour' baby!!
All the children stayed in character and joined in fully, this allowed them to really shine and show their full potential. This project will run within Class 6 for about the next 2 weeks, leading up to Paul's next visit, which both the children and myself are certainly looking forward to.
Throughout this project the children will never be wrong, we will follow their suggestions and ideas to create some wonderful work!

This afternoon the children decided that they would like to take it in turns to look after the 'flour' baby for a day and write a diary entry about it, keep an eye out for these little bundles of joy coming home to you!

Visit to the Gospel Church

Today classes 6 and 7 visited the Gospel Church in Georgetown to look at a bible exhibition. As always their behaviour was excellent. They had the chance to look around the exhibition and answered questions about the bible. We all found out a lot of information and had fun too!
The exhibition is open in the evenings and on a Saturday for the next few weeks. It is well worth going again as there was so much to see!
The church is starting up a Sunday School soon. I will keep you updated!

The school choir started today. It's from 3.05 till 4 every Wednesday for the junior children. I'm looking forward to hearing the songs!

Head boy – Connor Delaney
Deputy head boy – Ethan Thomas
Head girl – Tabitha Davies

We know these children will do a good job too! They’re better at remembering things than me!

Remember there is a training day Friday and Monday.

Y6 Leavers Assembly

Today the year 6 children took part in their last assembly at Deighton Primary School. I t was fantastic! They talked about memories, past teachers, sang songs and received certificates. It was very emotional. I am proud of each and every child and I will miss my year 6 children a lot. They have matured and grown up so much the past 2 years and are now ready for the comprehensive school.

I wish all the year 6 children luck at Tredegar Comp and all the best for the future.

Junior Sports Day

Today was the junior sports day at the Deighton Field. We hade 6 races - sprint, egg and spoon, skipping, backwards race, beanbag relay and the fun relay. The backwards race was hilarious and the boys skipping was fun to watch too!
The children could choose the races they wanted to enter and most children went in every race. It was great to see the children cheering each other on. It was an enjoyable day.
Thanks to the parents who came to watch. You created a great atmosphere and the children love you being there.
WATCH OUT FOR THE PARENTS RACE NEXT YEAR, AND MAYBE A TEACHERS RACE TOO!!!!

Slimbridge Wetlands.

On Monday 4th July classes 5, 6 and 7 went to visit Slimbridge Wetlands.
The site is a home for a variety of birds from around the world, I don't think any of us realised just how many different breeds of ducks there are!
Our visit started off with some pond dipping, followed by a morning of walking amongst the many, many birds.
We then spent the afternoon in 'Welly Boot Land' where the children managed to get themselves soaked in about 4 inches of water!
An interesting and fun day was had and the children were fantastically behaved.

Oakwood Park

On Thursday 7th July classes 8 and 9 visited Oakwood Park. Although thunder storms were forecast we were lucky with the weather and it stayed dry all day. The children had a fantastic day- some of them daring to go on the Big Three! Megaphobia was 'mega', Speed was 'awesome' and Bounce was 'amazing'! With small queues some children went on the same ride up to ten times!
The staff had just as much fun as the children, with photos to prove it!
It was great to see the children all getting on, mixing with each other, and every ride full of blue Deighton jumpers!!
A great day was had by all!.

Leavers Ball

I arrived at the leavers ball at 5.30 and waited eagerly for the chidlren to arrive. One by one they arrived, immaculately dressed. The girls all looked so beautiful, Miss  Jones and I were looking for tips! The boys made a great effort too! Very smart indeed. Hairstyles were fantastic, curly for the girls and straight for many boys. I can't believe how great everyone looked!
A great night was had by all! A great buffet, great music and party games, everybody having fun, a lovely atmosphere. Everyone had a great time, with Joseph Davies showing us the up and coming dance moves!
A big thank you to the parents for making such an effort, and a thanks to the adult helpers who made the night possible. A great big thank you to KAREN JONES! Without her fantastic organisational skills and creativity the ball would be non-existent. A big thanks!!!!

GOLDEN TIME

You will have had, or will be having a letter regarding Golden Time, which we will be starting on a Friday afternoon from the first week back.
Golden Time in a Primary school is a time for relaxation and fun as a reward for good behaviour during the week. StatCounter - Free Web Tracker and Counter

Each class will have a set of rules agreed on by both staff and pupils. Each child starts with an hour Golden time. Children who are in danger of breaking one or more of the rules in class or elsewhere in school or playground are given two verbal warnings If the child continues to ignore the warnings their Golden Time will be cut by 5 minutes. Children are given the opportunity to 'earn back' their time before the next "Golden Time".

"Golden Time" activities are suggested and agreed on by the children.  It is hoped that we will be able to offer a wider range of activities including some outdoor ones, weather permitting. In this way, the message we are giving the children is that if they are sensible, co-operative and go about their business to the best of their ability, the will be consistently rewarded for their efforts and they are secure in the knowledge that their reward will not be forgotten about due to pressure from other commitments in the curriculum.

Ideally those children who have a tendency towards disruptive behaviour will be less inclined to continue if they are risking the loss of a privilege which they had a part in deciding on.

Looking forward to it and I'm sure the chidlren are too!

CALLING YEAR 6 PARENTS - VOICE RADIO

Our year 6 children have been working alongside the staff at Voice Radio (voicefm.co.uk) based in Rhymney on a project to create their own radio show. The children have chosen songs to feature on their show and written and recorded their own ideas based around the topic of Tredegar. I can't wait for it to go live! I will keep you updated on the dates!

I was lucky enough to go down with them on Wednesday to witness the great work being carried out. The children have had the opportunity to try out mixing decks, website design, record themselves singing in a soundproof room, go live on the air and of course record their own show. All the children enjoyed themselves. It was a great day!

YEAR 5 AND 6 PARENTS - IRONMAN

All year 5 and 6 children took part in a drama workshop based on the story The Ironman by Ted Hughes. They thoroughly enjoyed it and have since been working hard on pieces of work based on the story. We have very talented children ... story writers and illustrators, model makers, newspaper reporters, poetry writers, actors/actresses and many more.

On THURSDAY 23rd JUNE the children's work/videos will be displayed in Tredegar Library from 3.30pm for you to come and view. The children have created some fantastic pieces of work so I hope to see you there.
